Seven State Championships headlined a banner year for the Southeast Knights. Champions in Boys and Girls Cross Country, Football, Girls Gymnastics, Boys Swimming, Girls Basketball, and Boys Golf.
Undefeated St. Paul girls State Champions
Silver Anniversary Team: Bertrand football and basketball, 1991-92. The Vikings went 13-0 in football while winning the Class C-2 state championship, then went 22-1 in basketball to complete the sweep.
Silver Anniversary Team: Lincoln Pius X girls basketball, 1991-92. The Thunderbolts went 25-0 while winning the Class B state title. The seniors graduated with a three-year record of 70-2.
Led by Hall of Famer Karlene Erickson, the Wheeler Central girls track team completed a four-year run that included a state runner-up finish in 1980 and Class D state titles in 1981, 1982 and 1983. The 1983 team scored 65 points, including three individual first places and a gold medal and the Class D state record in the 3,200-meter relay. Wheeler Central also finished second in the 400- and 1,600-meter relays. Wheeler Central scored 200 points in the district meet and 230 points in the conference meet.
The Class B state championship team with a record 54 points included No. 1 singles winner Robert Sjohom of Finland, No. 2 doubles champions Brad Scheidegger and Clay Castner and No. 2 singles runner-up Martin Sipple. The team was 6-0 in duals and won every invitational.

Season Record: 23-0. Class A state champion, defeating Omaha Marian by 56-47 in finals…Head Coach John Strain, assistants Dick Petri and Karen Irvine. Several basketball players also were on the state championship volleyball team, the first such double in girls sports.
