Athlete. Charles attended Kramer High in Columbus from 1932 to 1935 where he was earned 12 varsity letters, four each in football, basketball and track.  He was selected to the All State Football and Basketball teams two years each year.   As a way of demonstrating his all around athletic ability his resume would include state championships in the shot put and discus plus top scorer on the 1933 State Championship Basketball team.  After high school Charles attended UNL where he was a two sport athlete lettering three times in football and once in track.  In football he was All Big Six twice at center and All American in 1937 and 1938.  He was the starting center in both the East-West and College All Star games in 1939. Charles was the second round draft pick by the Green Bay Packers where he played center from 1939 to 1947.  He was nominated for All-Pro three times before his selection in 1945.  Leaving the Packers in 1948 Charles took the job of line coach at UNO, but the “Pack” lured him back with the same job in 1949.  Charles has two previous Hall of Fame inductions, one into the Nebraska Hall of Fame in 1972 and the Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame in 1973.  He served as President of the Green Bay Packer Alumni Association for four years and served as Youth Director for the Green Bay Packer Association for four years.  Charles is deceased.
