Volleyball in Fremont has been shaped by Sue Wewel during her five decades in the city. In three stints as a coach—two at Archbishop Bergan and one at Fremont High and Fort Calhoun— her teams have won 820 matches. During her 29 seasons at Bergan, the Knights qualified for nine state tournaments, made five finals appearances, and were Class D-1 champions in 2018. A graduate of North Platte St. Patrick’s and UNL, she also served as girls basketball coach during her first three years at Bergan. Sue coached at Midland University from 1983 to 1990 before returning to high school coaching at Fremont High.
