A standout small-school athlete, Dennis Korinek rewrote the state six-man record books. Playing halfback and defensive back, he earned all-state honors three times and led Ulysses to back-to-back undefeated seasons and a final No. 1 ranking his junior season. Combining rushing, passing, receiving and drop-kicking skills, he set state six-man career records for points (821) and rushing touchdowns (118) and single-season records for points (321) and touchdowns (49). On the basketball court, he led Ulysses to the state tournament semifinals in 1949, earning all-tournament honors. At the state track meet, he won two gold medals in the shot put, tying the Class C record as a junior. Turning down a minor league baseball contract, he instead chose to attend the University of Nebraska where he played football and basketball.
