JACKIE BRANDT-ATHLETE

OMAHA BENSON-1952

Before winning a Gold Glove as an outfielder for the San Francisco Giants, Jackie Brandt was the primary scoring threat for the Omaha Benson football team and four-year letterman on the Bunnies basketball and baseball teams.  His senior year of football, he scored 52 of the Bunnies 71 points.  He was All-Intercity as a pitcher/outfielder and was a hurdler in track.  Signed out of high school by the St. Louis Cardinals, he broke into the major leagues in 1956 and went on to collect more that 1000 hits and 100 home runs in a 12-year career with the Cardinals, Giants, Orioles, Phillies and Astros.  In 1961 he made the National League All-Star team and finished ninth in MVP voting.
